Orva's Apple Pudding Cake with Caramel Sauc

100 year old Montana Recipe

Ingredients:
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup nuts, any kind, chopped
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon of salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
6 large,hard,tart apples, preferably McIntosh, coarsely grated with peeling on

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Cream sugar and margarine; add eggs and blend. Mix in nuts. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, soda, and spices. Mix the sugar and flour mixtures together, and fold in the grated apples. Place in a 9 X 13 pan greased and bake for 40 minutes.

Caramel Sauce:

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup plain condensed milk
1 teaspoon of vanilla
Pinch of baking soda
Bring sugars, milk and butter to a boil; simmer until thickened. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Add a pinch of soda and stir. To serve, top cake with sauce. Ice cream can be added.
